The cable breaks internally at the jack - it is the weakest spot.

Like at the flexible point, or the metal bits of the jack itself?

At the transition between rigid and flexible plastic. It's an inbuilt weak point. Most jacks (including in the case of my headphones which have them at each ear too) are sealed units so you can't do so much about it. I used to try internal re-soldering on the set without removeable cables but for whatever reason it didn't last very long :/

Conf, take a look at this if you haven't already. http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/e976/
You could coat the flexible section with this stuff and reinforce it perhaps before it has a chance to break!

You could also try these: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?seq=1&format=2&p_id=8320&aid=cse&ref=cj. They reportedly sound very good and are cheap enough that you could buy a few for when they break and need replacing.
Risha and Jay Chan? Yeah, I ship'em.

Personally I can't stand in-ear headphones... my current two pairs are:

http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/ipod-mp3-portables/headphones/sennheiser-hd-212-pro-headphones/233036

These are the ones with a replaceable cord

My favourite pair though... http://www.razerzone.com/au-en/gaming-audio/razer-megalodon - cord has a woven sheath instead of rubber. I'm hopeful for them.

Also they are USB so aren't going to get the beating the other set has had being dragged everywhere... I don't have cause to use them as much as I used to but when a classmate a few years ago did quick caricature portraits of us a few years back the sennheisers were around my neck. Just made me realise how often they're there ^.^;

I ran a pair of Jbud J3's through the washer and dryer last night... panicked and plugged them in to see if they still work... and they still sound perfect.

I've also not broken the cable on these yet... I'm quite impressed with them!

Lo and behold, the earbuds I were using somehow broke by itself. Considering that both drivers still emit sound, but it's now in mono from a stereo source... I think it's the connector. I've sent it in for warranty.

If this doesn't pan out, Caltsar might get a new... well, convert?

Are those Jbuds really $60 normally?
I might just get a pair myself since Amazon's selling them for $10.
